Patios and firepits
A patio earns its place the day it turns an unused stretch of backyard into somewhere people actually sit. A firepit does the same thing for the cooler part of the year, and the two usually go in together, sized to one continuous footprint rather than sitting as two separate features on opposite sides of the yard.

Retaining walls, stonework and masonry
Any yard with more than a few inches of grade change between one edge and another eventually needs something to hold that slope in place, or a hard rain keeps carrying a little more of it away every season. A retaining wall does that job structurally. Stonework and masonry usually finish the job once the structural side is settled, turning a held slope into a surface someone would actually want to look at.

Chapter 03
Fences
Hoyer's builds fences in five styles: cedar, wrought iron, security, chain link, and board-on-board. Which one fits a given yard usually comes down to what the fence needs to do. Privacy and sound favor cedar's tighter board spacing or a board-on-board design, while a pool code or an HOA sightline rule often points toward wrought iron or a security style that does not block the view.
