What Is Leveling? What is Topdressing?
A lawn settles unevenly over time. A low spot holds water after every rain, a high spot gets scalped every time the mower crosses it, and both make the whole yard look rougher than it actually is. Leveling is the work of bringing those low spots back up to the grade around them.
Topdressing is the thin layer of sand, topsoil or compost spread across the turf that does the filling, working down between the blades rather than smothering them. None of this is really a mowing problem. It's a grading problem, and mowing lower or more often just makes the scalped spots worse.
